Area cities hosting fireworks extravaganzas

Published: Friday, June 30, 2006 4:44 PM CDT
Community firework displays this year will be limited to municipally sponsored events as cities have placed bans on the use of fireworks. The dry conditions have led city officials to completely prohibit the use of personal fireworks in most cities.

“As dry as it is there is no safe way to really shoot fireworks.” said Southlake Fire Marshal David Barnes.

Lewisville and other cities in Tarrant, Denton, and Parker counties will be included in the fireworks ban. Buying fireworks is permitted, but shooting them in banned areas is prohibited because of the dangerously dry conditions.

But that does not mean that sparkling shows are completely out of the question. The Red, White and Lewisville celebration will feature live music and, keeping with Independence Day tradition, one of the largest fireworks shows in North Texas.

Lewisville’s annual festival will be held on July 4 at Vista Ridge Mall, and admission is free. Activities will include music inside the mall at noon, music on the main stage outside of the mall at 6 p.m. and the fireworks finale at 9:30 p.m.

Reckless Kelly, an Austin-based rock-country group, will headline this year’s celebration. The disco-style band LeFreak will also perform along side the fire department’s bagpipe brigade.

Performances will begin at 6:15 p.m. with RD Superstars singing music from Disney’s “High School Musical” and the bagpipe brigade, followed by LeFreak at 8:30 p.m. and Reckless Kelly at 10 p.m.

Other cities in the area will also be hosting their own Fourth of July celebrations. Southlake is prepared with fire department staff on hand to make sure the city’s Stars and Stripes celebration and fireworks display goes off without a hitch.

Barnes said that the area around the launch point will be fenced off and that extra firemen will be on duty at Southlake Town Square to make sure that “fallout” from the fireworks display doesn’t reach any spectators.

“We have a 300 foot circumference that we call a clear area around the fireworks that is fenced off,” Barnes said.

Southlake’s fireworks display will be fired off of the west side of the Town Square parking garage. Southlake’s Recreation Specialist Kristin White said that the parking expansion will allow more people to park at and view the event. Free parking with a shuttle service to Town Square will also be available at White’s Chapel Methodist Church.

Stars and Stripes will begin at 5 p.m. with face painters, balloon artists, the Southlake Swing Band, the Southlake Choir and refreshments. The fireworks display will begin at about 9:30 p.m. and will last about 23 minutes.

Other fireworks displays around the Metroplex will also be hosted by cities such as Carrollton and Flower Mound.

The city of Carrollton’s Fourth of July celebration will begin at 6 p.m. at the Carrollton-Farmer’s Branch ISD soccer fields at 2001 Kelly Blvd. The event promises giant slides, roving stilt walkers, clowns and a free shuttle bus service. There will be no parking allowed at the soccer fields.

Coppell’s celebration includes a parade, followed by Picnic in the Park at 5 p.m. at Andrew Brown, Jr., Community Park East. Picnic baskets are encouraged, or food can be purchased at the park. The Lewisville fireworks display is situated so that Coppell residents attending Picnic in the Park can enjoy the show as well.

Flower Mound’s fireworks show will be held at Circle R Ranch, 5901 Cross Timbers Road. The fireworks display will start at dusk and there will be a free shuttle service from Flower Mound High School starting at 7 p.m.
