Lady M’s go through the motion against Plano East

BY RICKY MOORE, Staff Writer
COPPELL --- It’s safe to say that the team meeting Marcus’ volleyball coach Cristie Liles held following Tuesday’s three-game non-district loss to Plano East at Coppell wasn’t to discuss the itinerary for the team’s trip to Pearland this morning.
No, Tuesday night’s meeting was held in hopes that the Lady Marauders could get their focus straight and begin playing more consistently, Liles said.
It was obvious Liles wasn’t pleased with her team’s 25-14, 25-21, 25-21 loss to Plano East and it showed as she met with her team for more than 25 minutes following the match in a hallway at Coppell High School.
“Right now we need to regroup, refocus and try to understand what we are trying to do this year,” Liles said after the meeting.
What had Liles livid was her team’s lack intensity during the match.
“We showed no drive to win,” she said. “We were just rotating.”
In the opening game, Plano East zipped out to a 6-0 lead and never looked back. Junior Lauren Carpenter knocked down five kills and added five service points for the Lady Panthers to win the first game.
Marcus helped along Plano East’s efforts with eight errors that led to points.
“We just had too many unforced errors tonight,” Liles said. “Nothing went our way tonight. We were unemotional, uninterested and unconcerned.”
Marcus played better in the second game as the Lady Marauders grabbed their first lead of the night at 9-8 on a Plano East error. Marcus would lead once more at 10-9 after a service error.
Plano East senior Chrissy Disarro took over from there delivering five kills that were augmented by four kills from Carpenter to put away the second game.
In game three, Marcus showed some heart pulling ahead 14-8 thanks to five consecutive errors by Plano East. But the Lady Marauders could finish things off as Plano East fought back using a 17-7 run to end the match.
“I thought we had something going the third game but it fizzled out,” Liles said. “We have to learn how to take three out of five (games).”
The Lady Marauders (6-8) open play at the Pearland Tournament on Thursday against Sugarland Elkins.
Liles said she hopes the trip to Pearland will end up being a team-building trip.
“We all decided that this trip is going to turn us around one way or the other,” Liles said. “We are just going to keep plugging along.”
Flower Mound falls twice at Granbury
Flower Mound lost a pair of matches on Saturday at the Granbury Summer Sizzler Tournament. The Lady Jaguars (7-7) entered Saturday’s play with a five-game winning streak but suffered losses to Burleson, 25-14, 23-25, 26-24 and Denton Guyer, 25-19, 19-25, 27-25.
The Lady Jaguars open play at Arlington Classic on Friday.
