Battle of the Bands featured talented lineup
By BRIAN PORTER Managing Editor
The Mesquite Girls Softball Complex produced a few new sounds recently as the 6th annual Battle of the Bands took place with music from the genre’s of hip hop, metal, jazz and rock.
“Many of them practice all year just to get up this one time and perform,” said Dana Mitchell, Mesquite Youth Services coordinator. “You know, getting up to perform in front of an audience is not an easy thing.”
Mesquite Youth Services, Inc., with a grant from the Mesquite Arts Council and an in-kind donation from the Mesquite Fast-Pitch Softball Association, stages the event annually.
“It was a good event with a lot of good music,” Mitchell said.
The event is staged annually to allow students in Mesquite the opportunity to showcase their talents on stage in front of a live audience.
A large majority of the music this year were new songs created by the bands and solo acts, Mitchell said.
Each of the Mesquite ISD high schools were represented in the competition. Representing Horn High School and North Mesquite High School were Behold, My Beloved, Hometown Heroes, ZEPHYR and White Arms of Athena. MJOLNIR represented Mesquite and West Mesquite. SAIN, Darkened Elegy, and Party of Three represented Poteet and North Mesquite and Six Feet From Nothing rounded out the event with band members from West, Poteet and Horn. The four Solo Artists were Alex Olguin and Jesse James V of Poteet, Mesquite resident Calli Arriaga “the Pocket Star” and JMD from Mesquite and West Mesquite.
“Our original thought was a lot kids have bands in Mesquite, but have no place to play,” Mitchell said. “We plan to continue this as long as they enjoy doing it.”
The participation of all high schools helps the event, Mitchell said.
“It varies from year to year,” Mitchell said. “We are really excited about that.”
‘White Arms of Athena’ was the grand prize-winning band, with second place going to Darkened Elegy and third to Hometown Heroes.
In the Solo Artist category, the grand prize winner was Jesse James V, second place went to Alex Olguin and third place went to JMD.
The next event for Mesquite Youth Services, Inc., will take place Oct. 23, as 100 eighth-grade students from each middle school in the Mesquite ISD will be invited to participate in the Red Ribbon Week Youth Conference at the Mesquite Convention Center.
