Local author releases job search guide

Published: Tuesday, February 6, 2007 11:33 PM CST
Jill Pfaff Waterbury of Coppell successfully changed careers in midlife.

Now she has written a book to help other baby boomers accomplish the sometimes intimidating task.

Waterbury and her co-author Saundra Marling recently released “Boomers’ Job Search Guide: You’re Not Old, You’re Experienced.”

“The two of us met while working on our master’s degrees in counseling,” Waterbury said. “We ended up sharing a job at a career placement agency and the owner suggested that we write a book on the subject.”

The agency eventually closed and Waterbury now owns Right Management Consultants in Addison.

Waterbury had previously been employed as a retail manager, while Marling was a volunteer fundraiser for a women’s shelter.

“We wanted to help older people who were losing jobs or looking for new jobs,” Waterbury said.

They also were reaching out to people who were finding out that they were going to have to work until a much later age than they had originally planned to.

“A lot of people were starting to realize that retirement just wouldn’t take care of them,” Waterbury said.

She added that in the course of their work, she and Marling noticed that there were no books that they could suggest to mature workers which specifically addressed their needs.

Waterbury spoke at the International Career Development Conference in California in October and will make a presentation at the Human Resources Southwest Conference later this year.

The book consists of 10 chapters explaining the primary aspects of job searching, including assessment of skills, accomplishments and personality, decision-making, setting a plan, writing a resume’, the image presented to prospective employers, targeting a selected market, networking, interviewing, negotiating and communication.

Each chapter also contains success stories of individuals who have successfully changed careers, started their own businesses or re-entered the labor force after age 50 and ends with a list of resources for assistance.

Waterbury and Marling also provide examples of resumes and cover letters and lists of employers who seek older workers.

The workbook format of “Boomers Job Search” allows the reader to answer questions and apply information to personal issues.

The book is available at www.amazon.com and www.bn.com.
