U.S. Army pallbearers on Saturday load the casket of 2nd Lt. Peter Haskell Burks onto a carriage before entering Melissa cemetery.

Burks, assigned to the 4th Squadron, 2nd Stryker Cavalry Regiment, based in Vilseck, Germany, was killed Nov. 13 in Baghdad by a roadside bomb 13 months after earning his officer’s commission.

Although Burks is from Dallas his family is deeply rooted in Collin County.
