Field follies foil Lady Cats against Prosper

Published: Wednesday, March 19, 2008 11:31 PM CDT
If the district race indeed comes down to Prosper and Celina like Billy Coleman believes it will, the Lady Cats know exactly what they need to work on before the cross-town rivals collide again in mid April in what could determine the 9-3A champion.

Monday’s tilt against the Eagles unearthed the biggest chink in Celina’s armor. Save for a mistake-filled third inning by the visitors, it was an evenly contested battle of perennial playoff contenders. The Lady Cats lumped their errors together in a forgettable five-run third that allowed Prosper to pull away for good before drawing first blood on the reigning district champs with a 7-2 victory.

“The game was closer than the score indicated,” Coleman said. “We had one bad inning where we made some mistakes. Other than that, it was a 2-2 ballgame.”

It was a real litmus test for Celina after the Lady Cats hammered Liberty, 15-0, on Saturday in Frisco behind two doubles and a home run from sophomore catcher Jasmine San Miguel. It was the first district loss for the ladies in orange since the 2006 season when they competed at the 2A level.

The third inning proved to be the team’s ultimate undoing, though it could have easily gone the other way as well. With the bags full of Lady Cats in the top half of the frame, a shot to left field was snagged on a shoestring catch by the Prosper left fielder to end a serious scoring threat that would have plated at least two runners.

The Eagles only tallied three more hits than Celina and most were garden variety base knocks at that.

“They only had two really hard hit balls,” said Coleman, referring to doubles by sophomore Lissa Pappas and senior Laura Frye. “That’s just how it goes sometimes. We battled them all the way until the end we just didn’t get timely hits like they did.”

The Lady Cats were supposed to be back on the diamond Tuesday against Lovejoy, but soggy fields forced the game to be postponed. If it isn’t able to be played today, the two schools will convene next week for the make-up game.

The potential layoff will give Celina time to iron out some issues and get in some defensive work before a guaranteed meeting with Bonham on Tuesday. That might usually be seen as a cupcake if not for the loss to Eagles, which is forcing the Lady Cats to abide by the clichéd one-game-at-a-time approach.

“We can’t focus on us and Prosper,” Coleman said.

The head coach did assert that when the rivals bump heads again April 15, his squad will be ready. As it stands now, Celina trails Prosper by one game in the standings.

“I definitely think we will be a lot better ball club the next time we see them,” Coleman said. “

We’re alright.”
