Allen Garden Club hosts 2008 Spring Garden Tour


The Allen Garden Club will present their 2008 Spring Garden Tour, “Our Gardens are Works of Heart” from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, June 7. Keep Allen Beautiful, a community group that hopes to make Allen a cleaner, healthier and more attractive city, is their sponsor. Proceeds from the event will benefit community beautification projects of the Allen Garden Club, including the Children’s Native Plant Garden.

The 2008 tour will offer community members a rare opportunity to travel through seven privately owned and beautifully maintained gardens. Visitors are encouraged to photograph their favorite flowers, and Allen Garden Club members will be available to answer questions. The gardens along the tour will feature native and drought tolerant plants, colorful perennials, tropical retreats, an alley garden, herbs, square foot gardening, garden art, and water gardening with koi fish.

The Allen Garden Club will sell raffle tickets for a chance to win a combination yard vacuum/chipper/shredder donated by Keep Allen Beautiful. One lucky participant may also win a gift certificate for a one-hour massage donated by In Touch Day Spa.  At various gardens along the tour, Allen Garden Club members will have plants for sale, as well as note cards featuring a local artists’ rendering of the historic St. Mary’s Church.

Marriage seminar

Michelle Nietert, M.A., LPC, leads a weekly marriage enrichment seminar at 9:45 a.m. on Sunday mornings until May 25 at First United Methodist Church of Allen in the Upper Room Chapel. Neitert draws on more than 10 years of ministry and counseling experience in this workshop for newlyweds and couples who have been married for years. All will find useful tools as they study topics ranging from anger to forgiveness, children, finances, priorities, and when all hope seems lost.

Suncreek UMC offers VBS, summer camps

Register now for vacation bible school which will be held the week of June 16-20 from 9 a.m. to noon for children entering Kindergarten through Grade 5.  The charge is $20 per child.

Suncreek United Methodist Church will offer Summer Music and Art Camps for lower elementary July 21-25 (Grades K-2) and upper elementary July 28- Aug. 1 (Grades 3-5) from 9 a.m. to noon each day.  A middle school camp will also be offered July 28-Aug.1 (students who have completed Grades 6-8) from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. each day.  The charge for the camps is $50.

Connemara Conservancy launches photo contest

The Connemara Conservancy is asking photographers to take their best shot n of nature that is n and enter it in the land conservancy’s first photography contest. Winning photos will be featured in Connemara’s first Calendar, to be published in the fall of 2008. The first place photo will be featured on the cover.

Professional and amateur photographers are invited to submit photos through Aug. 15 of the Connemara Meadow Preserve, Blackland Prairie, Post-Oak Savannah, Cross Timbers and Rolling Plains. Creativity and unusual angles are encouraged.

Free girls lacrosse clinic by Allen Lady Eagles

CTYO announces

summer camps

Cross Timbers Youth Orchestra will host String Fling Summer Day Camp from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. daily from July 7-11 with a free public performance at noon on July 11. This will take place at the McKinney Performing Arts Center (MPAC), 111 N. Tennessee in McKinney. Cost is $165 per student. Cross Timbers Youth Orchestra (CTYO) is dedicated to enriching lives through music for youths in North Texas.  Students participate in youth string orchestras, classic guitar orchestra, and percussion orchestra as well as elementary strings programs for the beginner’s music education outreach program. Bach to Books features AHS Jazz Band

The award-winning Allen High School Jazz Band sets a swinging mood with jazz from the 1930s and ’40s at 7 p.m. Thursday, May 8, in the Allen Public Library’s Civic Auditorium.

The audience will be treated to such classics as Spain (Chick Corea), ‘Round Midnight (Thelonious Monk), Four (Miles Davis), Bird Land (Josef Zawinul), The Chicken (Alfred Ellis), Night Flight (Sammy Nestico), and The Heat’s On (Sammy Nestico).

Soloists for this concert include Josh Trent, Zack McCoy, Robert Thomas, Edsel Rivera-Rios, and George Eleftheriou, and Dani Cotton.

In March, the Allen High School Jazz Band traveled to Lubbock for a statewide Jazz and Blues Competition, winning the prestigious Outstanding Band for Class 5A.

The Jazz Band is under the direction of Matt Boening, a graduate of Texas Tech University and the Royal Academy of Music in London, where he earned a Masters Degree in Music.

Sponsored by the Friends of the Allen Public Library as parts of the “Bach to Books” arts series, this program is free and open to the public. No reservations are required.

Annual Third Grade Youth Concert

The Allen Philharmonic welcomes the Dallas Black Dance Theatre in three performances of “Peter & The Wolf” to accommodate all students in the Allen and area school districts.  Selections from the UIL Music Memory program will be performed in addition to the ballet.  This performance adds dance, an art form not currently offered in the elementary fine arts curriculum.  Third grade introduction to dance engages the younger students’ senses of sight and sound in what is, for many, their first concert experience. FUMC hosts divorce recovery seminar

First United Methodist Church of Allen hosts a Divorce Recovery Seminar designed for those going through divorce and those coping with life after divorce, from 7-8:15 p.m. on Mondays beginning April 21. Sessions continue April 28, May 5, May 12, and May 19, in the church’s Upper Room Chapel.

Topics include Five Stages of Divorce Grief, Helping Children Cope, Rediscovering Who You Are, and How to Know When You Are Healing.

Session leader, Russell Bowden, M.Ed., L.P.C. is a licensed counselor who has been in private practice in Allen for the last 16 years. Besides individual and group work, Bowden has presented at numerous conferences and seminars on grief recovery, relationships, parenting skills, and building self-esteem. Bowden received his master’s degree in counseling from Texas Tech University. Since 1983, he has been a licensed professional counselor in Texas.

Fill-the-Boot Campaign benefiting MDA

Allen Firefighters Association members will be collecting donations for the Muscular Dystrophy Association on May 17 and 18 at the intersections of US Highway 75 and McDermott, US Highway 75 and Bethany, US Highway 75 and Stacy Road.

In 2005, the firefighters raised $6,542 and hope to exceed that amount this year.

Money raised helps fund summer camps, orthopedic equipment, support groups, global research for 43 neuromuscular diseases, and local clinics.

MDA is a voluntary health agency working to defeat more than 43 neuromuscular diseases through global research, comprehensive client services and health education.

In Oklahoma and Texas, MDA offers four summer camps, more than 20 support groups and clinics, and more than $1 million in research grants to state hospitals and universities, including the University of Oklahoma.
