Coppell eliminates Arlington Lamar, will face Southlake Carroll in regional quarters
BY JUSTIN THOMAS, Staff writer
Coppell’s baseball team advanced to the Class 5A Region I quarterfinals Friday night after closing out Arlington Lamar in Game 2 of their area round matchup, 13-5.
The Cowboys grabbed the series lead after winning Thursday, 8-5.
Coppell will face the winner of an area round series between Southlake Carroll and Arlington Martin in the regional quarterfinals.
The Cowboys fell behind after the Vikings got to starter Zak Hermans for two unearned runs in the first inning, but tied things up with RBIs by Jacob Morris and Greg Higginbotham in the bottom of the second inning.
Lamar’s Chris Arocha — who hit a grand slam in Game 1 — laced a two-run shot in the top of the third to regain the lead, but once again the Cowboys had the answer.
Adam Toth led of the bottom of the third with a triple to deep left field off of Lamar starter Shane Laronde. Chad Kettler followed with an RBI single, and following a fielders choice by catcher Jonathan Walsh, D.J. Garber hit the Cowboys second triple of the inning to drive in courtesy runner Trevor Trudell. Austin Elkins added an RBI-single to score Garber and give the Cowboys their first lead of the game.
“The bottom of our lineup did a great job,” English said. “Elkins and Pratt did a good job in the seven and eight holes. And Morris kept us going with an infield single in the second. Everyone really just chipped in.”
Coppell took control in the fourth when Walsh hit a two-run homer over the right field fence to increase the lead to 8-4.
Lamar remained resilient, however, loading the bases with two outs in the bottom of the sixth to chase Hermans. Kettler came on in relief and allowed an RBI-single, but retired cleanup hitter Kyle Arnsberg to get out of the inning.
“(Hermans) really battled out there and showed a lot of character,” English said. “Kettler, that’s what he does. He always wants the ball in a tough situation.”
Hermans threw 5.2 innings, allowing five runs, three earned, on six hits. He struck out 12 Vikings.
Laronde allowed eight runs, five earned, in 3.2 innings for the Vikings and was charged with the loss.
Leading, 8-5, Coppell added five runs on two hits in the bottom of the sixth to put the game away.
“Our motto is one more week, and we have one more week to be together, and that’s really all we care about right now,” English said.
