Four Lewisville area teachers have been selected to participate in “From Disunion to Empire: The United States, 1850-1900,” a pair of summer institutes sponsored by Humanities Texas, the University of North Texas, and Trinity University.
Jarrod Irick, who teaches world history, U.S. History and street law at Lewisville High School; Dora Reinert, who teaches social studies, science and language arts at Prairie Trail Elementary in Flower Mound and Wendy Seeliger who teaches economics and AP world history at Lewisville High School will attend the institute on the UNT campus in Denton June 8-11.
Luana Hanley, who teaches AP U.S. History and U.S. government at Marcus High School, will attend the institute on the Trinity campus in San Antonio June 15-18.
U.S. Rep. Michael C. Burgess, R-Lewisville, nominated Irick and Hanley for this opportunity.
Each institute will bring together 40 outstanding teachers from across Texas to participate in lectures and workshops that examine U.S. history and Texas history in the second half of the nineteenth century.
Humanities Texas is delighted to include outstanding teachers from City in these educational initiatives, said Executive Director Michael L. Gillette.
Bringing teachers together to learn from leading scholars and from each other is an effective way to ensure that Texas students continue to receive the best possible educational opportunities. From Disunion to Empire is made possible with support from a We the People grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities.
The state affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities, Humanities Texas develops and supports diverse programs across the state, including lectures, oral history projects, teacher institutes, museum exhibitions and documentary films.
