Chad Haga always wanted to ride in the Rocky Mountains, though he never figured the chance would come at the biggest race of his life.
Haga, a 2006 graduate of McKinney High, and teammate Devin Carroll of Houston represented Texas A&M University at the 2008 USA Cycling Collegiate Road National Championships in Fort Collins, Colorado. The former Lion placed 56th overall in a race that featured 150 of the nation’s top collegiate cyclists, only 112 of which finished the race.
“That was by far the hardest race I have ever done,” Haga said.
“Just a little something to be excited about amidst all the suffering,” Haga said, who had nothing in the tank heading into the final climb of the race.
“This climb was probably a grade of 18 percent, and I got over it by willpower alone,” he said.”
