For the first time in two years, Carrollton’s schools will not be playing in the same district much less the same classification.
The most recent UIL redistricting spread the schools out among Class 5A and 4A and Regions I and II.
That means there is plenty more to read about in the 49th annual Dave Campbell’s Texas Football that hit newsstands late last week.
Texas Football selected Hebron and Creekview to each make the playoffs from its respective districts. Hebron was picked second in District 6-5A and Creekview was selected fourth in District 9-5A. Newman Smith drew a sixth-place nod in District 10-4A and R.L. Turner was picked eighth in 10-4A.
Hebron finds itself in possibly the toughest region. Region I is loaded with seven teams in the State Farm/Texas Football 5A Top 25.
Five of those schools are in the Top 10, including top-ranked Euless Trinity, No. 2 Plano, No. 3 Southlake Carroll (a member of District 6-5A), No. 5 Odessa Permian and No. 8 Abilene. Also in the Top 25 are Allen (No. 14) and Arlington Bowie (No. 20).
Region II, where Creekview resides, sports six teams in the Top 25 including Spring Westfield (No. 6), Cypress Ridge (No. 7), Round Rock Stony Point (No. 13), Lufkin (No. 17), Dallas Skyline (No. 21) and Garland Naaman Forest (No. 25).
Newman Smith and Turner join Region II, which has five teams from the district at the Class 4A Top 25 including Longview (No. 6), Texaranka Texas High (No. 9), District 10-4A’s Highland Park (No. 13), Dallas Carter (No. 16) and Waco (No. 25).
In District 6-5A, Texas Football tabs Southlake Carroll to win the district title. Hebron is picked second, followed by Flower Mound Marcus and Coppell. The top four teams make the playoffs. Lewisville was picked fifth and Flower Mound was selected sixth.
District 6-5A matches up against 5-5A in the first round of the playoffs and according to Texas Football that would setup playoffs matchups of Hebron against Keller Fossil Ridge and Carroll versus Grapevine in Division I. In Division II, Marcus faces Colleyville Heritage and Coppell takes on defending Class 5A Division I state champion Euless Trinity.
The district has three players on Texas Football’s Super Team. Hebron offensive lineman Joel Gray is on the Super Team. Carroll defensive lineman Brayden Burnett and Flower Mound’s Collin Ashley are on the third team. Ashley is listed as a defensive back but will play wide receiver this year.
In District 9-5A, Dallas Skyline is picked to win the district followed by Richardson Berkner, Lake Highlands and Creekview. Selected not to make the playoffs are Dallas W.T. White, Richardson, Dallas Molina and Dallas Sunset.
Texas Football matches Skyline against Rowlett and Berkner versus Garland in Division I. The Division II matchups are Lake Highlands against South Garland and Creekview against Garland Naaman Forest.
Skyline produced one Super Team player in third team defensive back Steve Williams.
Highland Park is picked by the magazine to win District 10-4A. The other playoff teams from the district according Texas Football will be Rockwall, Rockwall-Heath and Royse City.
Richardson Pearce is picked sixth followed by Newman Smith, Greenville and Turner.
District 10-4A pairs with 9-4A in the playoffs. According to Texas Football the Division I playoffs matchups would be Rockwall versus McKinney and Highland Park against Sherman. In Division II, Royse City would face Denison and Rockwall-Heath would take on Frisco.
Rockwall-Heath’s linebacker Austin Moss was selected to the Super Team second team defense.
