Looking ahead for college bound high schoolers

Published: Saturday, September 13, 2008 2:41 PM CDT
Plano Senior and Plano East Senior High will host colleges and universities next week during college night.

Juniors and seniors from both schools will get the opportunity to meet with representatives from colleges and universities from around Texas and the United States. This week counselors from Plano Senior High met with juniors in a classroom setting to educate them on the upcoming event.

“We want to encourage all students to come,” Bruce Richardson, Director of counseling for Plano Senior said. “We also sent home flyers with a list of confirmed colleges so the students would know what to expect.”

Plano Senior will host more than 230 schools, 30 of those will be at college night for the first time. Some of the Texas schools are Baylor University, Kilgore College, Rice University, and the University of Houston. They will also have Dartmouth, MIT, and Harvard. Richardson said at this time Houston schools are still confirmed, but pending whether conditions might not be available.

“We want students to gain knowledge about colleges outside of the U.S.,” Richardson said. “Here they can explore their options and come up with a fit for them.”

College night is about giving students the opportunity to meet face to face with college representatives to ask questions such as: what is the application process for your school? Or what areas of study do you specialize in? It’s also a chance to learn about many different schools without having to drive to each of them.

Plano East director of guidance, Jana Hancock, said their school is expecting approximately 200 colleges and universities. They will have browsing tables set up in the gym with building one being used as a presentation room. Hancock said they tried to get as many schools as possible.

“It’s never too early to start looking at schools,” Hancock said. “Here students can find opportunities they didn’t know about.”

Plano East will host schools such as the University of North Texas, Texas Tech University, Duke University, and Columbia.

Both schools stressed the importance of attending college night saying it will help expand their college search. Plano Senior High college night will be Monday, Sept. 15 from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Plano East Senior High college night will be Tuesday, Sept. 16 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.
