A cigarette started a fire that burned a house and field Thursday.
From Staff Reports
A Rowlett man suffered burns to his hands, arms and face as he tried to smother a fire that started in his back yard in the 2200 block of Crestview Lane and spread to a field behind his home at approximately 3 p.m. Thursday.
Assistant Fire Marshal Janice Brooks determined that the house caught fire when the resident discarded a burning cigarette into the back yard and went back into the home. A few moments later the house became fully engulfed in flames. The grass fire behind the home started after fireworks stored in the garage of the home ignited and launched into the field.
Approximately three acres of the open field adjacent to the shores of Lake Ray Hubbard burned, but despite high winds and code red fire danger warnings, firefighters kept the flames away from other homes in its path. The Rowlett Fire Rescue department was assisted by the Dallas, Sachse and Garland Fire Departments with a total of seven engines and three medical units.
Also at the scene were members of the Rowlett Rehab Corp, a part of the Community Emergency Response Team (CERT). This volunteer group brings a rehab/rehydration trailer to all major emergency incidents to provide food and supplies to the firefighters, as well as physical assistance where needed.
